Descriptive Writing

"Description beings in the writer's imagination, but should finish in the reader's." - Stephen King

Nov 15, 2022

As a writer, I find description to be one of the hardest challenges. Not only that, but as a reader, I hate reading descriptive passages and often skip them. It's of no fault to the writers I love but sometimes those descriptions just don't matter to me. However, every now and then I write a pretty decent descriptive passage that wows even myself. And hey! If you can't wow yourself and be your own fan, what are you doing this for? So, I'm going to share this short passage that wowed me and some co-workers.

"This girl is everything. She is the wild reincarnated with hair the color of a dusky sunset and eyes like the sparkling blue sea that spread out from the mountaintop. She has a laugh that reminds me of a jaunty flute jig played in an acoustic hall. Her spirit is like no other I have known in this world. She belongs to the wild. I am sure of it."

This description was originally inspired by a Chronicles of Narnia fanfiction I never got beyond the opening page of writing before giving up and losing the muses. It has not gone to the wayside and will forever live on as long as this site is maintained.
